Japan's Composite Wing F-16 Failure

In 1995, the Japanese Defense Agency (JDA) placed an order with Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) for 130 F-16 to be built with a composite wing.

Today with 75 of the aircraft built or being built, the acquisition price has escalated from $73 million to $109 million plus, "JDA officials have acknowledged that the F-2 (composite) wing experienced cracking at high energy loads, but details have been hidden".

We might also conclude that based on this failed experience, the Japanese have confidence they can build the composite wing for the Boeing 7E7.
